Through his photographs, volunteer photographer Leo Tsang takes his audience to Gansu Province’s remote mountainous areas. There, you will meet several ‘left-behind children’ – children whose parent(s) have moved to the cities to find work. Through his lens, Leo shows what life is like for these children at school, in their impoverished rural villages and at home with their grandparents.

Leo hopes to use the language of photography to help the public better understand poverty and Oxfam’s work in mainland China. He also hopes to raise public awareness and garner support for left-behind children by telling their stories.

Artist's bio:

Leo successfully completed a two-year certificate course on Commercial Photography jointly offered by the Extramural Studies of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Photo Centre in 1983. He launched two solo exhibitions at the Fringe Club in 1985 and 1986 about China after the economic reform: "In Sight" and "A Close Look". Tsang was an active member of Photo Art League in the ’80s in the area of fine art photography and collaborated with Hong Kong Arts Centre to organize workshops on documentary photography. He was an avid photographer who volunteered with Oxfam Hong Kong, and documented its development and community projects in China and India from 2002 to 2015. His major work on ethnic minorities in Hong Kong, Kids Alike, was published by Oxfam Hong Kong in 2006.

In 2013, Leo joined Lumen Visum for a 12-year project documenting the diminishing of local cultures of Yue Man Square, the transition of an urban district in the ’60s to a metropolitan area in the redevelopment of Kwun Tong. He has been working with Plan International Hong Kong since 2015 on projects regarding child marriage in Indonesia, Cambodia and the Philippines. His recent assignment in 2018 focuses on girls and women who are trafficked from Nepal to India.
